Should I leave tech sales for roofing sales?
Robust Roofing Careers · Updated October 2026
Plenty of SDRs and account executives are rethinking tech sales after layoffs, reorganizations and comp plans that can change every year. Roofing sales is a different job, in person and local, but the core skills carry over, and Robust Roofing pays for them with an unusually generous structure: a true 50/50 split of job profit with nothing taken off the top, not a 10/50/50, and also a $75,000 per year base.
Should you leave tech sales for roofing sales?
Leave if you want to sell face to face, see the result of your work quickly, and be paid on the profit of each job you run. Stay if you need a remote role or love long, multi-stakeholder enterprise deals.
The people who make the switch well tend to share a few traits: they liked the discovery call more than the spreadsheet, they want a job that does not live on a laptop, and they are comfortable being judged by results. If that is you, the move from tech to roofing is less of a leap than it sounds. For a wider look at changing fields, see roofing jobs for career changers.
How is the work different from SaaS sales?
SaaS sales happens on video calls and in a pipeline tool, often over weeks or months with buying committees; roofing sales happens at the homeowner's house with one household deciding, and you are there on build day. You sell something people can see, and you stay with it until it is finished.
| Question | Tech sales (typical) | Roofing sales at Robust Roofing |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you work? | Remote or in an office, on video calls | In person, at homeowners' houses across North Georgia |
| Who decides? | Buying committees, procurement and legal | The homeowner, often with the insurance company's adjuster involved |
| What creates demand? | Outbound prospecting and marketing | Hail and wind storms, and aging roofs |
| How long is the cycle? | Often weeks to months | Inspection, documentation and the adjuster meeting, then most average-size roofs built in one day |
| How is pay structured? | A base salary and variable commission tied to a quota | A true 50/50 of job profit, nothing off the top, and also a $75,000 per year base |
| What happens after the sale? | Often a handoff to customer success | You stay through the build and the final walkthrough |
The tech sales column describes common patterns, not any named company.
How does the pay structure differ?
Tech sales pay is usually a base salary and variable commission measured against a quota, with accelerators, clawbacks and plans that can change each year. At Robust Roofing, the commission is a share of job profit: a true 50/50 split with nothing taken off the top and no cap, and Robust Roofing also pays a $75,000 per year base.
Roofing has its own fine print to watch for. In a 10/50/50, a widely used plan, 10 percent (often of the contract price) comes out before the profit is split; Robust Roofing takes nothing out first. The JobNimbus Peak Performance report puts the most common profit share among roofers that pay on profit at 20 percent, so Robust Roofing's 50 percent is more than double, and the same report finds about one in three roofing companies pay commission only, a risk anyone leaving a base salary in tech should weigh. How the base and the split work together is explained in your interview; read what a 10/50/50 split is before you compare offers.
Top performers can make upwards of $400,000 a year. That is top-performer potential, not typical pay; what you make depends on the roofs you sell and build.
Which tech sales skills carry over?
Discovery, objection handling, disciplined follow-up and clean notes all carry over directly. AEs used to running a deal from first meeting to signature adjust fastest, because a Robust Roofing Project Manager runs every job from the inspection to the final walkthrough.
- Discovery: on a roof inspection, you learn what the storm did, how long the family plans to stay and what matters to them.
- Objection handling: homeowners worry about the deductible, the insurance process and whether to trust a roofer. Clear, honest answers earn the decision.
- Mutual action plans: the steps of an insurance claim are a timeline you walk the homeowner through.
- Pipeline hygiene: photos, notes and next steps for every job, kept in order so nothing slips.
- Demos: walking a homeowner through options and colors in the RoofMap portal is a product demo with a real roof at stake.
What will feel familiar, and what will not?
Familiar: being measured by results, the rhythm of follow-up, and a product you must explain clearly. Not familiar: Georgia weather, ladders and roofs, insurance claims, and seeing what you sold installed, usually in a single day.
- It is field work. The role is full-time and based around Johns Creek in the North Atlanta metro, serving 39 North Georgia cities. It is not a remote job.
- You will learn roofs. Shingles, flashing, ventilation and what hail and wind do to them are all taught, along with training toward HAAG certification, which Robust Roofing provides and which requires 100 verified roof inspections and an exam.
- You will learn insurance. Claim documentation is taught by a licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on Robust Roofing's staff; no other roofing company in Georgia matches that insurance help.
- The rules are real. Under Georgia law, roofers stay out of negotiating a homeowner's claim. Robust Roofing's part is documenting damage, writing the repair scope, meeting the insurance company's adjuster and submitting supplements, and it never pays or waives a deductible.
- There is no handoff. In tech, customer success takes over after the signature. At Robust Roofing, you stay through the build and the final walkthrough.
