Hail Damage Roof: What It Looks Like, Repair or Replacement

Hail damage on a roof rarely looks like much from the driveway. A storm drops ice across your yard for a few minutes, the sun comes back out, and the next morning the shingles look exactly the way they did the day before. Very often they are not. This page covers what hail damage looks like on asphalt shingles, metal and the soft metals around your house, what size hail damages a roof, how to check after a storm without climbing a ladder, and how to decide between hail damage roof repair and a full replacement, with or without an insurance claim.

What hail damage looks like on a roof

Hail seldom punches holes in a roof. It bruises it. Each stone that hits hard enough knocks loose the ceramic granules that protect the shingle from the sun, and the impact can crack the fiberglass mat underneath. The roof keeps shedding water for a while, which is exactly why so much hail damage goes unnoticed until it turns into a leak.

Hail damage on asphalt shingles

On a shingle roof, hail damage usually shows up as dark, roughly round marks where the granules are gone and the black asphalt shows through. The hits are random, scattered across the slope with no pattern or straight lines. A fresh bruise often feels soft when pressed, a little like a bruised apple, because the mat underneath has fractured. On older, brittle shingles, larger hail can crack tabs or snap off corners outright. Ridge caps tend to take the hardest hits because they sit at the top of the roof and are bent over the peak. After a storm you may also find a fresh wash of granules in the gutters and piled at the bottom of the downspouts.

Plenty of things look like hail but are not: blistering from heat, scuffs from foot traffic, normal granule wear on an aging roof, and the dark streaks of roof algae. Telling them apart takes a trained eye at arm's length, which is the whole point of a real hail damage roof inspection.

Hail damage on a metal roof

Hail dents metal more readily than it breaks through it. Expect round dimples across the panels, sometimes with chipped or cracked coating where the stone hit. A dented metal roof usually keeps shedding water, so the question becomes whether the damage is functional, such as broken coating that can rust over time, loosened fasteners or opened seams, or purely cosmetic. That distinction matters because many policies carry cosmetic damage exclusions for metal roofing. Our guide on metal versus shingles in Georgia explains that trap in plain English.

Soft metals: gutters, vents and everything else

The easiest hail damage to see is on the soft metals: gutters, downspouts, box vents, ridge vents, flashing, chimney caps, AC condenser fins and mailboxes. Look for round dents, spatter marks on painted surfaces and torn window screens. These dents tell an adjuster how big the hail was at your house, and the damaged items themselves often belong in the claim. Our guide to what else hail damages walks through the full list, and dented gutters can be replaced with new seamless gutters at the same time as the roof.

What size hail damages a roof?

The common rule of thumb is that hail roughly one inch across, about the size of a quarter, and larger often damages typical asphalt shingles. Smaller hail can still bruise shingles that are aging and brittle. Size is never the whole story, though. Wind that drives hail in sideways, how densely the stones fell, the age and condition of the shingles, which slopes faced the storm, and the trees or neighboring houses that sheltered your roof all change the outcome. Two houses on the same street can come out of the same storm very differently.

Why hail damage is often invisible from the ground

A hail bruise is about the size of a coin, sitting on a textured surface, viewed from twenty or thirty feet below at a steep angle. From the yard it looks like ordinary weathering, if it shows at all. The real damage, the cracked mat, is underneath the surface. Then a Georgia summer bakes those fractures wider, a winter rain finds them, and the leak appears a year or two after the storm that caused it. By then the policy's window for that date of loss may be closing, and tying the damage to one storm is much harder. That is why we document every slope with photos from the roof and drone images, instead of guessing from the street. Our guide on drone roof inspections explains what a camera catches and what still needs a hand on the shingle.

How to check for hail damage after a storm without climbing

  1. Stay off the roof. Wet shingles and loose granules make it slick, and a fall is not worth any claim.
  2. Write down the date and time of the storm. If it is safe, photograph a few hailstones next to a coin or a ruler for scale.
  3. Walk the property and photograph the gutters, downspouts, AC unit, window screens, mailbox, deck and any outdoor furniture or cars.
  4. Check the ground under the downspouts for a fresh pile of granules.
  5. Zoom in on each slope with your phone from the yard and save the photos, even if you see nothing.
  6. Look at ceilings and, if you can do it safely, the attic for new stains or drips.
  7. Look up the storm on the hail map and our storm history, then schedule a free inspection.

Look up hail at your address

The free North Georgia Hail Map lets you search your zip code or town, or tap the map, to see hail days near your address, the estimated maximum hail size for each zip from radar data, and National Weather Service storm reports. Our own storm history lists recent hail and wind events across our service area, with the zip codes in each path and what to check. Keep in mind that a zip code inside a hail swath means hail fell somewhere in that zip. Whether your particular roof was damaged depends on the factors above, and a free inspection settles the question with photos.

Hail in Atlanta today? Where to check

If you heard hail in Atlanta today, or anywhere from Marietta to Gainesville, start with the checklist above while the evidence is fresh. Look up your zip on the hail map and our storm history, knowing that a storm from this afternoon may not be listed yet. Then call us. We serve Atlanta and the North Georgia cities around it, and a free inspection after a storm is exactly what we are here for.

Hail damage roof repair or full replacement?

Hail rarely hits one shingle. It hits whole slopes, more or less evenly, so the honest answer depends on how widespread the damage is and how old the roof is.

When hail damage roof repair makes sense

A roof repair fits when the damage is limited to a small area, the roof is fairly young, and matching shingles are still available. A proper repair replaces the damaged shingles, seals them correctly, and swaps out any dented vents or cracked flashing. On older roofs, though, repairs get tricky. Brittle shingles crack when they are lifted to slide new ones in, discontinued colors do not match, and a patched slope can look worse than the damage did. Our guide on partial repair and the shingle matching problem covers how carriers handle that.

When you need a hail damage roof replacement

When bruising runs across most slopes, a full roof replacement is the repair that actually fixes the roof. We tear off to the deck, replace any damaged decking, and install new underlayment, flashing, ventilation and GAF shingles, and on average roofs most replacements are done in one day. Through the Options tab in RoofMap, our homeowner portal, you can choose upgrades such as GAF Timberline UHDZ or impact-resistant shingles. After an approved claim, your cost is normally your deductible. If you are paying out of pocket, a typical North Georgia replacement runs roughly $8,000 to $16,000, and our roof replacement cost guide explains what moves that number. You can also pay over time at checkout for smaller balances through our financing options.

Insurance claims for hail damage

Hail is a covered peril under many homeowners policies, but every policy is different. Your deductible may be a flat amount or a percentage wind and hail deductible, your policy may pay actual cash value or replacement cost, and some policies carry roof age or cosmetic damage terms. No honest roofer can promise you an approval.

What we can promise is the right order of operations. Get inspected first, then decide whether to file. Our guide should you file a roof claim explains why. If the damage supports a claim, our licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff documents and scopes the damage in the language carriers use, and we meet the insurance adjuster on your roof. In Georgia a contractor cannot act as the homeowner's public adjuster, so your claim stays yours, and we bring the evidence. Report storm damage promptly, because policies limit how long you have, as our guide on claim deadlines explains. More detail is on our roof insurance claims and storm damage restoration pages.

One more thing to know after a big storm: deductible waivers are illegal in Georgia, and Robust Roofing never offers them. If anyone offers to cover or waive your deductible, read our guide on hail damage roofing scams before you sign anything.

North Georgia hail season

Our severe weather peaks in spring, roughly March through May, when cold fronts run into warm, humid air. Summer thunderstorms can also drop hail, and damaging storms show up in other months too, as our storm history makes clear. Hail falls in narrow swaths, so one subdivision in Woodstock or Alpharetta can be hit hard while the next one over is untouched. Our guide to North Georgia hail season covers the calendar, and our service areas page lists every city we cover.

Quick answers

What is hail damage on a roof?
Hail damage is the bruising, cracking and granule loss that hailstones cause when they strike a roof. On shingles it usually means knocked off granules and a fractured mat underneath. On metal it means dents and chipped coating. The roof often keeps shedding water at first, which is why the damage is easy to miss.
Can hail damage a roof even if nothing is leaking?
Yes. Hail usually bruises shingles rather than punching holes, so a damaged roof can stay dry for months. The cracked mat and missing granules let sun and water wear the shingle faster, and leaks often appear a year or two after the storm. An inspection soon after the storm is the way to know.
What does hail damage look like on a roof?
On asphalt shingles, look for dark, roughly round spots where granules are missing, scattered randomly across a slope, that may feel soft when pressed. Older shingles can show cracked or broken tabs. On metal roofs you will see round dents. Gutters, vents and AC fins usually show dents first.
What size hail damages roofs?
As a rule of thumb, hail roughly one inch across, about quarter size, and larger often damages typical asphalt shingles. Smaller hail can still bruise aging, brittle shingles. Wind, shingle age, which slopes faced the storm and nearby shelter all change the outcome, so an inspection settles it.
Can pea size hail damage your roof?
Pea size hail rarely damages a sound shingle roof on its own. If it came with strong wind, or your roof is old and brittle, it is worth a look, and the wind itself can crease or lift shingles. Check your gutters and vents, and call us if anything looks off.
Can quarter size hail damage your roof?
Yes, it often can. Quarter size hail, about one inch, is the common rule of thumb for when typical asphalt shingles start taking real damage. If quarter size hail fell at your house, get a free inspection before deciding whether to file a claim.
Can hail damage a metal roof?
Yes. Hail dents metal panels and can chip or crack the coating, which can lead to rust over time. A dented metal roof usually still sheds water, and many policies exclude purely cosmetic damage to metal roofing, so it is worth reading your policy and having the roof documented carefully.
Can a hail damaged roof be repaired?
Sometimes. If the damage is limited to a small area, the roof is fairly young and matching shingles are available, a repair can work. When bruising runs across most slopes, or the shingles are brittle or discontinued, a full replacement is usually the real fix.
How do you fix hail damage on a roof?
Limited damage is fixed by replacing the bruised or cracked shingles and any dented vents or flashing, then sealing everything correctly. Widespread damage is fixed with a replacement: tear off to the deck, replace damaged decking, then install new underlayment, flashing, ventilation and shingles.
How long does hail damage repair take?
The work itself is quick. A small repair usually takes part of a day, and most full replacements on average roofs are done in one day. The insurance side takes longer, since inspections, the adjuster visit and approvals come first. Your RoofMap portal shows where things stand.
Can hail damage a brand new roof?
Yes. New shingles handle hail better than old, brittle ones, but large hail can still bruise or crack a new roof. If a big storm crosses your area, have even a new roof checked and keep the photos, because storm damage is an insurance matter, not a warranty matter.
Can hail damage cause roof leaks?
Yes, usually later rather than right away. Once the granules are gone and the mat is cracked, sun and heat widen the damage and water finds its way through. Many hail leaks show up a year or two after the storm, which is why waiting for a leak is the expensive way to find out.
Can hail damage roof decking?
Typical hail rarely reaches the decking through intact shingles, but very large hail can break through, especially on older roofs. The more common problem is slow leaks through hail damaged shingles that rot the decking over time. Damaged decking is found and replaced during tear off.
Does hail damage cause granule loss on a roof?
Yes. Hail knocks granules loose wherever it strikes, leaving dark spots on the shingle and fresh granules in the gutters and at the downspouts. Some granule loss is normal as a roof ages, so the pattern matters: hail leaves random, round marks rather than even wear.
Are asphalt shingles hail resistant?
Standard architectural shingles handle small hail reasonably well but can be damaged by larger stones. Impact-resistant shingles are built to resist hail better, though no shingle is hail proof. We offer impact-resistant shingles and GAF Timberline UHDZ as upgrades through the RoofMap Options tab.
Does a roof warranty cover hail damage?
Generally no. Manufacturer warranties cover defects in the materials, and our 50-year labor warranty covers our workmanship. Hail is storm damage, which is handled through your homeowners insurance, subject to your policy and deductible. Read your specific warranty for details.
How long do I have to report hail damage?
It depends on your policy. Most policies require prompt notice of a loss, and many limit how long after the storm you can file. The safe move is a free inspection within weeks of the storm, then a decision on filing while the evidence is fresh.
Was there hail in Atlanta today?
Search your zip code or town on the free North Georgia Hail Map at northgeorgiahailmap.com and check our storm history page, keeping in mind a storm from today may not be listed yet. If you heard hail, photograph your gutters and vents and call (470) 887-6637 for a free inspection.
