Black Streaks on Your Roof: What They Are and What Not to Do

Those dark streaks running down North Georgia roofs are one of the most misdiagnosed things in home ownership. They are not dirt, they are not rot, and despite what a door-knocker may have told you, they are not proof you need a roof. Here is what they are and the one way people turn them into actual damage.

It is algae, and it is eating rock, not shingle

The streaks are gloeocapsa magma, an airborne algae that colonizes shingles and feeds on the crushed limestone used as filler. It thrives exactly here: humidity, warmth, and shaded slopes, especially north-facing ones and anything under tree canopy. It spreads downhill with rainwater, which is why it streaks. The damage it does to the shingle itself is minor; the damage it does to curb appeal is total. Moss is a different organism and a different story: it grows a root-like grip that wedges under shingle edges and lifts them, and it does deserve prompt removal.

The cardinal sin: pressure washing

A pressure washer removes the streaks by removing the granules, which are the shingle's armor against sun. One satisfying afternoon can strip years off a roof, void warranty coverage, and drive water up under courses. The same goes for aggressive scraping and for harsh acid products. If a cleaning crew quotes your roof and the word "pressure" appears anywhere, that is the whole interview.

What actually works

• Soft washing: low-pressure application of a cleaning solution, dwell time, and a gentle rinse. Done properly, with landscaping protected, it removes the algae without touching granules. Expect a few years before streaks creep back; the algae is airborne and Georgia is Georgia.
• Zinc or copper strips near the ridge release ions with each rain that suppress regrowth below them. Modest effect, real, best as maintenance after a cleaning.
• Algae-resistant shingles with copper-infused granules are the durable fix, and most major lines offer them with long algae warranties. If a replacement is in your future anyway, this is a checkbox worth ticking; ask us about it when the time comes.

When streaks are telling you something else

Streaks plus curling edges, bare spots, or piles of granules in gutters is not a cleaning conversation; it is an age conversation, and cleaning an exhausted roof paints the countdown timer. Similarly, green fuzz (moss) in the streak zones means moisture is lingering long enough to grow it, which points at shade and ventilation.
