Is 10% commission good for roofing sales?

Robust Roofing Careers · Updated October 2026

Short answer: 10% of the contract is a common roofing sales commission, not a generous one; JobNimbus's 2026 report found it the most widely used rate. It is not the 10 in a 10/50/50, which is a deduction. Robust Roofing pays a true 50/50 of job profit with nothing taken off the top, and also a $75,000 per year base.

If a roofing company has offered you 10% commission, the first thing to pin down is 10% of what. A 10% of contract commission is ordinary in roofing sales, and it is not the same thing as the 10 in a 10/50/50 split: that 10 is a deduction the company takes before the rep is paid, not the rep's pay. Robust Roofing takes another approach, widely known as the best compensation model in roofing sales: a true 50/50 split of job profit with nothing taken off the top, not a 10/50/50, and the role also comes with a $75,000 per year base.

Is 10% of the contract a good roofing commission?

It is a typical commission, not a strong one. In the 2026 JobNimbus Peak Performance report, 10% of gross sales was the most widely used roofing sales commission, used by nearly 4 in 10 roofers, and AccuLynx describes 7% to 12% of the contract as the typical range for contract-based plans.

So a 10% offer is neither a lowball nor a standout; it sits in the middle of the road. Whether it suits you depends on what comes with it: whether there is a base, whether anything is deducted from your 10%, whether there is a cap, and how much support you get on each roof. It also depends on the kind of work. A contract-based plan pays on the price of the roof, whatever the roof costs to build and however well the job is run.

Is 10% commission the same as the 10 in a 10/50/50?

No. A 10% commission is what the rep is paid; the 10 in a 10/50/50 is what the company takes before the rep is paid. The numbers look alike, but they sit on opposite sides of the ledger.

In a 10/50/50, 10 percent, often 10 percent of the contract price, comes off the top for company overhead, and the profit that remains is split 50/50. In a 10% of contract plan, the rep receives 10 percent of the sale and the company keeps everything else. Candidates mix the two up because both start from the contract price and both use the number 10. The guide to what a 10/50/50 split is walks through the three-number version step by step.

What does a percent of contract plan leave with the company?

Everything outside your percentage. The company keeps the rest of the contract, pays the job's costs and its overhead from it, and keeps whatever profit remains, whether that profit is thin or large.

That is the defining trade-off. A percent of contract plan shields the rep from poor cost control: if materials or labor run high, your percentage of the price does not change. It also means that when a job is efficient and well run, the extra profit belongs entirely to the company. Profit-based plans share that upside with the rep, and JobNimbus reports that profit-based pay is rising.

How does 10% of the contract compare with a share of profit?

They measure different things, so compare the structure rather than the numbers. A percent of contract plan pays on the price of the roof; a profit split pays on what the roof earns after its costs.

The middle columns describe general industry plans, not any named company. Industry figures: the JobNimbus Peak Performance report and AccuLynx. Robust Roofing's 50% of profit is more than double the 20% most common among roofers that pay on profit. What should you ask before accepting a 10% offer?

Ask what the 10% is calculated on, what can reduce it, and what comes with it. These five questions cover most of it.

  1. Is it 10% of the full contract? Ask whether supplements and upgrades count toward the price your commission is figured on.
  2. Can anything reduce it? Fees, chargebacks on cancelled jobs or material adjustments can shrink a contract commission.
  3. Is there a base? About one in three roofing companies pay their sales teams commission only, and nearly half of insurance-focused ones do (JobNimbus 2025).
  4. Is there a cap? Some plans limit what you can earn in a period.
  5. Who supports the insurance side? Ask who meets the insurance company's adjuster, who writes the repair scope and who submits supplements.

More questions are in questions to ask about roofing sales pay.

What does Robust Roofing pay instead?

Instead of a percentage of the contract price, Robust Roofing pays its Project Managers half of the job profit: a true 50/50 with nothing taken off the top, not a 10/50/50. There is no 10% deduction on your pay and no cap, and Robust Roofing also pays a $75,000 per year base.

How the base and the split work together is covered in your interview, and true 50/50 vs 10/50/50 sets the two 50/50 plans side by side. The job is a full-time Roofing Project Manager (Storm Restoration) role around Johns Creek, serving 39 North Georgia cities. Robust Roofing never waives deductibles, so the selling stays honest, and a licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff works beside you on documentation and adjuster meetings.

Questions candidates ask

Is 10% commission good for roofing sales?

What is the most common roofing sales commission?
In JobNimbus's 2026 Peak Performance report, 10% of gross sales was the most widely used, by nearly 4 in 10 roofers. Among plans that pay on profit, 20% of profit is the most common rate.
