September 6, 2025: Quarter-Size Hail Along the Cobb and Cherokee Line

On Saturday, September 6, 2025, storms moved across Cobb and Cherokee counties and dropped hail from Kennesaw and Acworth up toward Woodstock. Official reports logged quarter-size stones near Oak Grove and nickel-size hail in Kennesaw and Acworth. If your roof was under that storm and nobody has looked at it since, the calendar now matters as much as the hail.

What happened on September 6, 2025

The National Weather Service logged four hail reports from this storm. Two measured 1 inch, quarter size: one 2 miles south of Oak Grove on the Cobb County side and one 2 miles east-southeast of Oak Grove in Cherokee County. Two more measured 0.88 inch, about nickel size: one in Kennesaw and one 2 miles east-northeast of Acworth.

Those are ground observations. For many storms we can also show radar-based swath estimates zip by zip, which map hail across whole neighborhoods but remain estimates rather than measurements. Our radar data has no zip-level swath for this date, so the official reports are the record. Atlanta News First reported that the same storms tore pieces of roofing off the Red Roof Inn in Kennesaw, with debris landing on an empty car, and that a tree fell on power lines near Old 41 Highway in Acworth, cutting power to dozens. A driver caught in it described branches across the road and hail. No one was hurt.

Communities in the path

The reports cluster in Kennesaw, just east of Acworth, and around Oak Grove, the area on both sides of the Cobb and Cherokee line between Acworth and Woodstock. Homes in Kennesaw, Acworth, Woodstock and the Oak Grove area were closest to the observed hail. Neighbors a few miles away may have seen smaller stones or none at all, which is why a roof-by-roof inspection beats guessing.

What quarter-size hail does to a roof

Hail around 1 inch is the size where shingle damage becomes common. The stone bruises the shingle, knocking granules loose and cracking the fiberglass mat beneath, and the shingle quietly starts to fail. Because nothing breaks open, the roof can look perfect from the yard for a year or more. A roof hit in September 2025 has now been through a winter and a full summer, which is when bruised spots tend to show themselves: bare patches where granules washed away, shingles that blister or curl early, and leaks that seem to come from nowhere.

The damage at the Kennesaw motel shows this storm carried strong wind as well, and wind breaks shingle seal strips and creases tabs that then lie back flat. The storm's evidence often survives on the soft metals. Look for dents on gutters and downspouts, roof vents and flashing, along with torn window screens, chipped vinyl siding and flattened AC condenser fins. Those marks help an inspector connect your damage to this storm date.

How we help with an older claim

A claim for a storm more than a year old needs careful documentation, and that is where we are strongest. Our free inspection photographs every slope and the soft metals and tells you honestly whether you are looking at hail damage or normal aging. If the damage is from the storm, our licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff documents and scopes it the way carriers write estimates, tied to the September 6, 2025 date of loss. We meet your carrier's adjuster on the roof, submit supplements with photos for missed items or damage found during tear-off, and complete the paperwork that releases recoverable depreciation on replacement cost policies. When a claim is approved, your cost is normally your deductible.

Approval is your carrier's decision under your policy, and with an older storm, your policy's deadlines matter even more. We never promise an outcome, and we never waive or rebate a deductible, which is illegal in Georgia.

Policies expect prompt notice of a loss, and many set a limit measured from the date of loss, commonly one or two years. For this storm, the date of loss is September 6, 2025. If your policy allows one year, that window may already have closed. If it allows two, it would run to September 2027. Your policy's exact wording controls, so read it or ask your agent, and see our guide to roof claim deadlines. Either way, an inspection now is the next step.

Quick answers

How big was the hail in Kennesaw on September 6, 2025?
The National Weather Service logged 0.88-inch hail, about nickel size, in Kennesaw, and the same size 2 miles east-northeast of Acworth. The largest reports, 1 inch, came from near Oak Grove on both the Cobb and Cherokee sides.
Can I still file a claim for the September 6, 2025 storm?
Possibly. Many policies set limits of one or two years from the date of loss, so a one-year limit may have passed while a two-year limit would run to September 2027. Your policy's wording controls, so check it or ask your agent right away.
My roof looked fine after the storm. Could it be damaged now?
Yes. Hail bruising is hard to see at first and tends to show up after a winter and a summer as granule loss, early wear or a leak. An inspection can tell storm damage apart from normal aging.
Did the September 6, 2025 storm bring wind damage too?
News reports describe pieces of a Kennesaw motel roof coming off and a tree on power lines near Old 41 Highway in Acworth, so strong wind was part of the storm. Wind can break shingle seals and crease tabs without tearing shingles off, which an inspection checks for.
Did the September 6, 2025 storm damage my roof?
If you are in one of the zip codes above, there is a real chance. Hail of three quarters of an inch bruises aging shingles; one inch and up is the size most often behind roof replacement claims, though coverage always depends on the inspection and your policy. The only way to know is an inspection, which we do for free with photos.
How long do I have to file a claim for this storm?
Policies require prompt notice and many set a deadline measured from the date of loss, so sooner is better. Get the roof inspected first, then file if the damage supports it; filing a claim that will not qualify only puts a claim on your record.
What if my neighbors are getting new roofs and my claim was denied?
Denials happen for fixable reasons: a drive-by inspection, missed slopes, or a scope written without the metals. Re-inspections and supplements with documentation are normal. Our licensed adjuster on staff handles that process.
