June 27, 2025: Half Dollar Hail Between Acworth and Woodstock
Friday, June 27, 2025 was the third straight day of severe storms in metro Atlanta. That evening, half dollar hail fell between Acworth and Woodstock, quarter size hail hit Holly Springs and the area northeast of Dunwoody, and warnings covered much of Cherokee and Cobb counties. If your roof has not been inspected since, it should be.
What happened on June 27, 2025
Storms fired across North Georgia from late afternoon on. At 5:48 PM, the National Weather Service warned of a storm near Canton moving north, with quarter size hail possible for Canton, Woodstock and Holly Springs. At 5:55 PM, nickel to quarter size hail was reported in Holly Springs. At 6:37 PM, power lines came down on Breedlove Road about five miles west-southwest of Ball Ground.
The main hail came after 7 PM. At 7:08 PM a storm over Doraville drew a warning that included Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Roswell. At 7:15 PM another storm sat over Acworth, moving northeast at 10 mph, with a warning for southwest Cherokee, north Cobb and southeast Bartow counties that named Woodstock, Acworth, Kennesaw, Oak Grove and Kellogg Creek. Quarter size hail (1 inch) was reported about four miles northeast of Dunwoody at 7:23 PM. One minute later, half dollar hail, 1.25 inches, was reported about three miles east of the Oak Grove community, on the southwest side of Woodstock. At 7:33 PM, more half dollar hail fell about a mile west of Oak Grove, just east of Acworth. Just before 8 PM, heavy rain flooded Columns Drive near Johnson Ferry Road in east Cobb, with vehicles submerged.
The largest hail reported in the area that day was 1.25 inches. These are observations sent to the Weather Service by the public and trained spotters, many through the mPING reporting app, so they show where hail was seen, not every street it touched. The next evening, June 28, another round brought trees down onto homes in Sugar Hill and trees down in Holly Springs.
Communities in the path
Cherokee County had the most hail reports: Holly Springs early, then the Oak Grove area and the southwest side of Woodstock after 7 PM. On the Cobb side, Acworth sat under the 7:15 PM storm, and that warning stretched to Kennesaw and Marietta. Northeast of Dunwoody, quarter size hail fell as a separate storm worked through Doraville, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. North Cherokee near Ball Ground had wind damage, and east Cobb had flooding. If you live between Acworth and Woodstock, this is a date to check.
What half dollar hail does to a roof over time
Hail of 1 to 1.25 inches sits right at the line where shingles start taking functional damage. A newer, well sealed roof may come through fine. A roof that is 10 to 15 years old, with drier asphalt and thinner granules, often does not. Hits strip granules and can bruise the mat, and soft metals like vents, gutters and window screens dent.
Over time, those small hits turn into bigger problems. Bare asphalt cooks in Georgia sun, turns brittle and cracks. Granule loss speeds up. Bruised shingles lose their grip on the course below, and wind starts lifting them. By the time water stains a ceiling, the cause is often more than a year old, which is why roofs leak while the shingles look fine from the yard.
Claim support from Robust Roofing
Our inspections are free, and every one comes with photos: hail hits marked in test squares, damaged vents and gutters, and the condition of each slope. A licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on our staff documents the loss and scopes it line by line. We meet your insurance adjuster on the roof so the damage gets seen in person, not argued over the phone. When the first estimate leaves something out, we file supplements with the proof, and we help you collect recoverable depreciation once the work is finished.
With an approved claim, you normally pay only your deductible. Whether a claim is approved is up to your carrier, and we will never tell you otherwise. Waiving a deductible is illegal in Georgia, and we do not offer it.

The late-claim reality and this week's to-do list
June 27, 2025 is now more than 15 months back. Homeowner policies generally require prompt notice of a loss and set a deadline to sue the carrier, commonly one or two years from the date of loss. Measured from this storm, that is June 27, 2026 for a one-year clause and June 27, 2027 for a two-year clause. Neither date settles your situation on its own. The policy wording and the way your carrier handles notice do. Our guide to how long you have to file explains the details.
Because storms hit the area on June 25, 26 and 27, the date of loss can get muddy, and Weather Service reports for each day help sort it out. This week, read your policy's conditions section, collect any dated photos from that week, and schedule a free inspection. If we find damage, report it promptly. If we find nothing, you will hear that from us. If you are close to a deadline and the carrier pushes back, call a Georgia attorney now.
