May 2, 2025: Hail From Milton to Gainesville and a Lake Lanier Tornado

Friday, May 2, 2025 brought two rounds of storms to North Georgia. Around midday, quarter size hail fell in Milton as a storm crossed Alpharetta. That evening, half dollar hail fell along Thompson Bridge Road north of Gainesville, minutes before a brief EF1 tornado touched down nearby. Seventeen months later, roofs under either storm deserve a closer look.

What happened on May 2, 2025

The first round arrived around midday. A trained spotter reported quarter size hail, 1 inch, in Milton at 12:20 PM. At 12:36 PM, the National Weather Service warned of a storm over Alpharetta moving east at 15 mph, with quarter size hail and 60 mph gusts possible for Alpharetta, Milton, Roswell, Johns Creek and Sandy Springs. By 12:54 PM it was over south Forsyth County. In Habersham County, dime to quarter size hail fell around 1:58 PM about three miles south of Hollywood, near Highway 365.

The evening round was stronger. At 6:45 PM, half dollar hail, 1.25 inches, was reported along Thompson Bridge Road about three miles north-northwest of Gainesville. Ten minutes later, at 6:55 PM, a tornado touched down nearby. The Weather Service damage survey rated it EF1 with peak winds of 90 mph, a path 2.75 miles long and up to 150 yards wide, and about nine minutes on the ground. It started off Thompson Bridge Road (Highway 60) near Lakewood Baptist Church, where 10 to 15 large trees were uprooted, knocked trees down across an apartment complex along North Cliff Colony Drive, then tracked mostly over Lake Lanier to The Bluffs along Cochran Road and Willow Trace, where at least five to seven homes had large trees snapped or uprooted. The survey found no structural damage and no injuries.

Later that night, quarter size hail fell southwest of Jasper in Pickens County near Pettit Road and Henderson Mountain Road at 8:40 PM, and multiple trees came down along Rockhouse Road near Salacoa Road in Cherokee County. The hail and wind reports are observations sent to the Weather Service by spotters and the public. The tornado details come from its formal damage survey.

Communities in the path

At midday, Milton and Alpharetta in north Fulton took the hail, with Johns Creek, Roswell, Sandy Springs and south Forsyth inside the warned area. In the afternoon, southern Habersham County near Hollywood saw small hail. In the evening, the storm hit the Thompson Bridge Road corridor on the north side of Gainesville in Hall County, the lakeside neighborhoods north of town, and the Murrayville area, before later storms reached Jasper in Pickens County and north Cherokee. Storm data for the day centers on Alpharetta, Gainesville and Milton.

What half dollar hail and tornado winds do to a roof over time

Half dollar hail is past the size where asphalt shingles start losing granules and bruising, and roofs older than about ten years are the most exposed. Strong thunderstorm and tornado winds cause a different kind of damage: broken seal strips, creased shingles, and limbs dropped on the roof. Neither always shows from the ground, and both worsen with time.

A bruised shingle has lost the granules that block the sun. The exposed asphalt dries, shrinks and cracks through two Georgia summers, and a roof hit in May 2025 has now had both. A creased or unsealed shingle catches wind in every storm that follows until it tears or blows off. Water eventually follows the damage into the decking, and the first leak often shows up long after the storm is forgotten. Our storm damage restoration page covers how we repair and replace roofs after hail and wind.

Insurance claim support from Robust Roofing

You get a free inspection with photos of each slope, every marked hail hit, and the vents, gutters and flashing that tell the story of a storm. A licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on our staff documents the loss and writes the scope. When your carrier sends an adjuster, we meet them on the roof so nothing is overlooked. If the initial estimate falls short, we file supplements with supporting evidence, and we help you collect recoverable depreciation after the work is complete.

Once a claim is approved, your cost is normally just your deductible. The carrier makes the approval decision, not us. Deductible waivers are illegal in Georgia, and Robust Roofing does not offer them.

The late-claim reality and what to do this week

Most policies require prompt notice of a loss and limit how long you have to sue the carrier, often one or two years from the date of loss. From May 2, 2025, a one-year clause would have ended May 2, 2026, and a two-year clause would end May 2, 2027. Neither date answers the question by itself. Your policy's exact language controls, along with how your carrier treats late notice. Read our guide to roof claim time limits in Georgia before you decide anything.

This week, find your policy and read the conditions section on notice, proof of loss and suits. Look for dated photos of hail or fallen limbs from that Friday, then schedule a free inspection. If we find storm damage, report it promptly. If we find none, we will tell you. If you are near a deadline and the carrier is disputing the loss, talk with a Georgia attorney now.

Quick answers

Was there a tornado near Gainesville on May 2, 2025?
Yes. The National Weather Service survey rated a brief tornado EF1 with peak winds of 90 mph. It touched down at 6:55 PM off Thompson Bridge Road north of Gainesville and tracked about 2.75 miles, mostly over Lake Lanier, ending at 7:04 PM. Damage was mainly to trees, with no structural damage or injuries reported.
How big was the hail in Gainesville on May 2, 2025?
Half dollar hail, 1.25 inches, was estimated along Thompson Bridge Road about three miles north-northwest of Gainesville at 6:45 PM, the largest hail reported in the area that day.
Did Milton get hail on May 2, 2025?
Yes. A trained spotter reported quarter size hail in Milton at 12:20 PM, and the Weather Service warned of a storm over Alpharetta at 12:36 PM with quarter size hail possible.
Is it too late to claim damage from the May 2025 storms?
It depends on your policy. Many Georgia policies require prompt notice and limit suits to one or two years from the date of loss, but the wording varies and your carrier decides how late notice is handled. Read the policy and get a documented inspection now.
Did the May 2, 2025 storm damage my roof?
If you are in one of the zip codes above, there is a real chance. Hail of three quarters of an inch bruises aging shingles; one inch and up is the size most often behind roof replacement claims, though coverage always depends on the inspection and your policy. The only way to know is an inspection, which we do for free with photos.
How long do I have to file a claim for this storm?
Policies require prompt notice and many set a deadline measured from the date of loss, so sooner is better. Get the roof inspected first, then file if the damage supports it; filing a claim that will not qualify only puts a claim on your record.
What if my neighbors are getting new roofs and my claim was denied?
Denials happen for fixable reasons: a drive-by inspection, missed slopes, or a scope written without the metals. Re-inspections and supplements with documentation are normal. Our licensed adjuster on staff handles that process.
