Roof insurance claims in Alabama: what is different from Georgia
- Nobody at a roofing company can negotiate your claim. Alabama law (Ala. Code 8-36-2(c)) bars a residential roofing contractor from representing or negotiating for a homeowner on an insurance claim. Robust Roofing documents the damage, writes the repair scope, meets your insurance company's adjuster at the house and submits supplements with photos; you and your insurance company make the decisions.
- Five business days to cancel after a coverage letter. If your insurance company tells you in writing that it will not cover all or part of the claim, you can cancel an insurance-paid roofing contract in writing until midnight of the fifth business day after you receive that notice (Ala. Code 8-36-2, as amended in 2019). The "ten days from signing" you may read online is the old 2012 text.
- Your insurer has deadlines. Alabama's claims rules (Ala. Admin. Code 482-1-125) give the insurance company 15 days to acknowledge your claim and 30 days after it receives your completed proof of loss to accept or deny it, and a denial has to name the policy provision it relies on.
- No public adjusters in Alabama. The Alabama Department of Insurance does not license or recognize public adjusters. If you want someone to negotiate a claim for you, that is an attorney.
- Weather claims are protected. Since January 1, 2026, an Alabama insurer cannot cancel or non-renew a home policy based solely on a weather claim (Alabama Department of Insurance Bulletin 2025-08). A claims-free discount can still be removed, so ask your agent about price.
- You can see the depreciation math. On request, your insurance company must give you the claim file worksheets detailing every deduction for depreciation (Ala. Admin. Code 482-1-125).
What stays the same in both states: your deductible is always yours and Robust Roofing never pays, waives or rebates one; the build and the 50-year labor warranty work the same way.
