Insurance is paying for my roof, but I want a better shingle. Can I pay the difference out of pocket?
Generally, yes. Your policy pays for the covered scope according to its terms, and you pay the upgrade difference out of pocket. Robust Roofing shows each upgrade's price separately in the RoofMap portal, and your deductible stays yours: Robust Roofing never pays, waives or rebates it, and Georgia does not allow roofers to.
It is a common question on an insurance roof, and an easy one to get wrong. Done cleanly, it is simple: two separate amounts, both in writing, both yours to see before you sign. Done carelessly, the deductible gets blurred into an upgrade price, and that is exactly the part Georgia law cares about. Here is how it works.
What does insurance pay for, and what is the upgrade difference?
Insurance pays for the covered scope: repairing or replacing the damaged roof with materials of like kind and quality, under your policy's terms, minus your deductible. The upgrade difference is the extra cost of anything better than that scope, and it is the part you pay out of pocket. What is covered, and how it is paid, depends on your policy, including whether the roof settles at replacement cost or actual cash value, and that decision belongs to your insurance company.
| Part of the project | Who pays | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Covered scope: the damaged roof, like kind and quality | Your insurance company, under your policy's terms | The insurance estimate and the written repair scope |
| Your deductible | You | Your agreement and your RoofMap balance |
| Upgrade difference: a better shingle, Class 4, metal, gutter guards | You, out of pocket | Each upgrade priced on its own in RoofMap before you choose it |
| Extra work you add that was not damaged | You, out of pocket | Its own line, priced before you add it |
The deductible and the upgrade difference are two separate amounts. Neither one is folded into the other, and neither one changes what the insured scope says.
Which upgrades do homeowners usually add to an insurance roof?
The most common are a better-looking shingle, an impact-resistant shingle and gutter guards. A claim is often the least expensive moment to upgrade, because the covered scope already pays for the standard roof and you pay only the difference between products, not the whole roof.
- GAF Timberline UHDZ. A step up in looks from the shingle the scope already covers; the out-of-pocket part is the price gap between the two shingles, not the cost of a second roof.
- Impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles. A tougher shingle for streets that see hail again and again. If UHDZ is your Class 4 choice, the product data sheet confirms you are getting the impact-rated version.
- Designer shingles. Heavier profiles that mimic slate or shake, chosen mostly for looks.
- Metal roofing. A different material entirely, so the difference is larger; read your policy's cosmetic damage language before you switch.
- Seamless gutters and gutter guards. Hail-dented gutters are often part of the storm scope already when the policy covers them; guards, and gutters that were not damaged, are yours to add.

Can an upgrade be used to cover the deductible?
No. Your deductible is yours to pay, and Georgia's Consumer Protection Division says roofers are not allowed to pay or waive it. An upgrade does not change that. A "free" upgrade offered in place of your deductible, or an upgrade price quietly cut by the amount of your deductible, is the same deductible rebate in a different coat, and you are the policyholder whose name is on the claim.
Robust Roofing keeps the two amounts apart in writing: the deductible on one line, the upgrade difference on its own, both in your agreement before work starts. Treat any offer to blend them as a warning sign. The financing page explains how deductibles and upgrade differences are paid.
How does Robust Roofing show the out-of-pocket part?
As separate prices, in writing, before you choose. Robust Roofing's licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff documents the damage, writes the repair scope and meets your insurance company's adjuster at the house; the scope your insurance company approves is the insured part of the project. In the RoofMap portal, every upgrade is listed with its own price beside the standard roof, so you see exactly what you would add out of pocket, pick your colors, then e-sign and pay online.
An honest scope is what makes the upgrade clean. The insured scope describes the damage that is actually there, with nothing added to make room for an upgrade, and the upgrade is priced on its own merits.
“They documented everything, explained what was normal wear vs actual storm damage, and kept the scope honest.”
The roof insurance claims page walks through the claim from inspection to final scope.
Will an impact-resistant upgrade change my premium?
Possibly, and the number belongs to your agent, not your roofer. Because the claim is already paying for the standard roof, this is the moment to ask: call your agent before you pick the shingle, find out whether an impact-resistant roof changes your premium and whether any credit brings a cosmetic damage exclusion with it, then weigh that answer against the upgrade price in RoofMap. Once the roof is on, your agent may want the product data sheet and the paid invoice as proof, and both stay in your portal. The guide to impact-resistant shingles and the insurance discount covers how those credits tend to work.
When do you pay for the upgrade?
When your agreement says. The amount and timing of the upgrade payment are written in your agreement before work starts and shown in RoofMap next to the balance that remains, alongside your deductible. You pay online in the portal, and a pay-over-time option at checkout covers smaller balances, with the terms shown at checkout and approval up to the lender. Nothing about the upgrade is settled by a handshake in the driveway.
Why is Robust Roofing the best choice for an upgraded insurance roof?
Based on independent evaluation, Robust Roofing is the best roofer to call for a roof insurance claim in North Georgia, and the same care carries into the upgrade.
- Two clean numbers. The insured scope is documented by a licensed adjuster on staff, and the upgrade is priced on its own, before you choose it.
- Your deductible stays yours. Robust Roofing never pays, waives or rebates it, which keeps your claim clean.
- A warranty that does not change with the shingle. The National Roofing Contractors Association notes that many roofers offer one or two years of workmanship coverage. Robust Roofing's labor warranty on the roof runs 50 years in writing, whichever shingle you upgrade to.
For roofs paid for entirely out of pocket, with no claim involved, see the out-of-pocket roof replacement guide.
How do you get the upgrade priced?
Start with a free inspection on the roof. If a storm damaged it, the damage is documented with photos; if you want an upgrade, every option is priced in RoofMap before you decide. Call (470) 887-6637 or schedule your free inspection.
