Wind vs Hail: How Georgia Storms Damage Roofs Differently
The same thunderstorm can hurt your roof two completely different ways. Hail bruises. Wind creases and lifts. Both are covered perils, both can total a roof, and each leaves a different fingerprint that a claim lives or dies on.
What hail does
Hail is blunt impact. It knocks granules loose and bruises the shingle mat underneath: soft spots that feel like a bruised apple under your thumb. Fresh hits show as dark spots where granules left; the fracture underneath spreads with heat cycles until the mat fails. Hail also writes its signature on everything else it touched: dented gutters, vents, and flashing, pocked deck stain, shredded screens. What wind does
Wind is leverage. Gusts get under shingle edges and lift, which breaks the sealant bond between courses and creases the tab where it folded back. A creased shingle is structurally broken even after it lies back down flat, and a broken seal invites the next gust deeper. Wind damage concentrates where the aerodynamics do: eaves, rakes, ridges, and the windward slopes, and its endgame is missing tabs and exposed underlayment. Unlike hail, wind can leave one slope wrecked and the opposite slope untouched.
Why the difference matters in a claim
- Different evidence. Hail claims lean on soft-metal collateral and hit density. Wind claims lean on crease patterns, broken seals, and directional concentration. An inspection that documents both separately gives the adjuster two clean stories instead of one muddy one.
- Different arguments. Hail gets disputed as "blistering or age granule loss." Wind gets disputed as "improper installation or old sealant failure." Knowing the counterargument decides what gets photographed.
- Different repairability. A few wind-creased shingles can sometimes be repaired; widespread seal failure cannot. Hail bruising across slopes is a replacement conversation. Where that line sits on your roof is exactly what the inspection determines.
